Feb 28, 2002 · Hippocampal neurogenesis has been observed in adult animals from birds to humans 1,2,3,4,5,6. The newly generated cells may have a function in cognition and brain repair.Cited by: 2976. The answer, presumably, is “function.” Adult hippocampal neurogenesis adds particular functionality to the mammalian hippocampus and presumably is involved in cognitive functions that we consider to be essential for humans. There is a price to pay for this type of plasticity.

Dentate granule neurogenesis is increased by seizures and contributes to aberrant network reorganization in the adult hippocampus. J. Neurosci. 17, 3727–3738 (1997).
It is now widely accepted that adult neurogenesis occurs in the DG of humans (Eriksson et al., 1998, Spalding et al., 2013), as well as most mammals and several other vertebrates. Adult neurogenesis is the most robust form of plasticity in the adult brain and likely contributes to memory formation.Cited by: 332.
